ART
Artwork abounds in Argentina, reflected in various mediums and interpretations
from north to south. Village markets, public plazas, and creative street vendors
offer some of the finest goods produced in South America.
The northwest flourishes with authentic handicrafts designed by smiling artisans
with tremendous talent. Local markets overflow with stacks of fragile pottery,
including delicate pots and vases of all shapes and sizes. Rustic jewelry, leather
accessories, and gleaming works of silver are on display for travelers to both
peruse and purchase. Stunning pendants of rhodochrosite (termed rosa inca)
allure travelers for their polished texture and striking hues of pink. Vibrant
tapestries - depicting traditional scenes of the north - are woven with the most
brilliant of colors before gracing the walls of admiring customers. Wichi Indians
continue to master their indigenous craft of majestic woodwork, carving utensils
and collectible creatures from quebracho and palo santo. The northeast boasts
dazzling gems from local mines, resulting in precious stone pieces sculpted into
bracelets and necklaces. Such items would compliment a loom woven poncho or
llama wool sweater. In almost all central squares, aspiring artists sell their
paintings and unique renditions of local scenes and landscapes.
