CULTURE

As a vast nation of contrasts, Argentina offers unique attitudes and customs sure
to please travelers from all walks of life. Indigenous roots fused with European
influences create modern traditions mixed with cultural pastimes of centuries ago.

Argentina was once home to nomadic tribes dating back to 10,000 BC. It was not
until 1516 that the Spanish arrived seeking wealth and land. Argentina at last
declared independence from Spain in 1816. The next two centuries would bring
stages of urban growth, large-scale immigration, and political turmoil. Despite
prosperous moments, Argentina has suffered economic disaster on numerous
occasions. Argentina is now perceived as a nation full of alluring and
unforgettable contrasts: tango tunes and folklore dances, splendid wine and
steaming
mate, arid deserts and glistening glaciers, chic avenues and unpaved
roads, galloping
gauchos and glitzy celebrities, roaming llamas and waddling
penguins, homemade pastas and sizzling steaks, graceful statues and colorful
graffiti, rich communities and impoverished villages, brick cathedrals and adobe
chapels, patron saints and gods of soccer. Amidst such diverse elements, the
people of Argentina have developed a great sense of pride - evident in their warm
and welcoming embrace that greets friends and guests alike.
